Three materials come up in almost every Texas Hill Country road conversation: caliche, crushed limestone road base, and decomposed granite (caliche vs road base Texas). All three get used on Texas properties. All three have legitimate applications. And all three get misapplied often enough that contractors end up getting called back to fix work that was done wrong the first time.

First, Let’s Clear Up the Terminology



If you’ve talked to more than one contractor in the Texas Hill Country, you’ve probably heard the same material called three different things.


Road base, flex base, crushed limestone, and gravel all refer to the same product in this region — a crushed, angular limestone aggregate that compacts into a firm, stable surface.

Caliche is related but different. It’s a naturally occurring sedimentary material — calcium carbonate that has bonded with gravel, sand, and clay over thousands of years. In some areas, it’s excavated directly from the site and used as sub-base material. It’s not the same as the processed crushed limestone you’d order from a quarry.


Decomposed granite (DG) is something else entirely — a weathered granite product with a sandy, fine-particle texture. It’s popular in landscaping and residential driveways in parts of Central Texas, but it behaves very differently from either caliche or crushed limestone under real working conditions.

Caliche vs. Road Base: Performance on Hill Country Terrain


Where Caliche Works


Caliche has been used on Texas ranch roads for generations, and for good reason. When it’s properly compacted with moisture, it hardens into an almost concrete-like surface. It’s economical, widely available across Blanco, Gillespie, and Kerr counties, and works well for long, low-traffic access roads where aesthetics aren’t a priority.


If you’re putting in a back-pasture road that’s going to see a tractor twice a month, caliche can absolutely get the job done at a lower cost per yard than processed road base.

Where Caliche Falls Short


The problem with caliche is that it’s not a uniform product. Quality varies significantly depending on where it’s sourced. Some caliche has the right mix of fines and aggregate to lock and harden properly. Other caliche is mostly clay with very little calcium carbonate binding — and that material will turn soft and slick in the rain.


Caliche also doesn’t hold up as well as processed crushed limestone under repeated heavy equipment traffic.


If you’re building a construction access road in Comal County that’s going to see concrete trucks, delivery vehicles, and equipment haulers for the duration of a build, caliche is not the right call.

And if your end goal is chip seal or asphalt down the road, crushed limestone road base is the appropriate foundation — not caliche. Do it right the first time, or plan to tear it out and start over.

Crushed Limestone Road Base: The Hill Country Standard


For working roads on Texas Hill Country properties, processed crushed limestone road base is the standard — and for good reason. Unlike caliche, its quality is consistent. The angular shape of the crushed aggregate allows the material to lock into place under compaction, creating a surface that resists erosion and holds up under heavy loads.


In Comal County and Kendall County, where ranch properties are frequently developed for residential use, road base is the go-to material because it: 


  • Compacts to a stable surface that supports construction equipment

  • Handles Texas Hill Country flash flood runoff when properly crowned and drained

  • Provides the correct base profile for future chip seal or asphalt paving

  • Is available from local quarries, keeping costs competitive

Decomposed Granite: When It’s the Right Call


DG Has a Place — Just Not on Working Ranch Roads


Decomposed granite has a natural, rustic appearance that works well for certain residential applications. Property owners in the Texas Hill Country sometimes use it for: 


  • Decorative driveway entrances from the road to a gate

  • Parking areas around guest houses or cabins

  • Pathways and landscape features on developed properties


DG is permeable, relatively inexpensive upfront, and installs quickly. For a short residential driveway on a flat lot where the primary goal is aesthetics, it’s a reasonable option.

Where DG Fails on Hill Country Properties


The Texas Hill Country is not flat, and it doesn’t have gentle rain. In Blanco County, Gillespie County, and across the Edwards Plateau, heavy storms produce fast runoff on rocky, caliche-laden soil that doesn’t absorb water the way softer ground does.


Decomposed granite has real weaknesses in that environment: 


  • Fine particles wash away on slopes in heavy rain, leaving bare patches that require constant refilling

  • It doesn’t compact firmly enough to support equipment heavier than a pickup truck

  • Without stabilization, ruts develop quickly in high-traffic areas

  • It is not a suitable base for chip seal or asphalt if you ever plan to upgrade


For a back-of-property ranch road, a construction access road, or any road that needs to support agricultural or construction equipment, DG is not the right material.

You’ll spend more money patching and refilling over time than you would have spent building it right with crushed limestone road base from the start.

Which Material Is Right for Your Road?


The short answer: it depends on the road’s purpose, the terrain, and what you plan to do with the property long-term. Here’s a quick guide: 


  • Caliche: Low-traffic back-pasture roads, temporary access paths, budget applications where you’re willing to accept more maintenance. Not appropriate for build-site access roads or roads intended to be upgraded.

  • Crushed limestone road base: Construction access roads, ranch roads that see regular heavy use, any road you intend to chip seal or pave later. The correct choice for most working Hill Country properties in Comal, Kendall, and Kerr counties.

  • Decomposed granite: Short residential driveways, decorative parking areas, landscape paths. Not appropriate for slopes, heavy equipment, or any working road application.


If you’re not sure which material fits your site conditions, the right move is to have someone walk the road with you before you commit. Terrain, slope, drainage patterns, and the intended use all affect the answer.

Ask Any Contractor These Questions Before You Sign

  • What material are you proposing and why is it the right call for this site specifically?

  • What base depth are you building to, and why?

  • How are you handling drainage and crown so this road handles flash flood runoff?

  • If I want to chip seal or pave this road in the future, will this base support that?


A contractor who can’t answer those questions clearly is a contractor who hasn’t thought the job through.

Is caliche the same thing as road base in Texas?

Not exactly. In common use, Texans sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but they’re different products. Caliche is a naturally occurring sedimentary material found in the ground — calcium carbonate bonded with gravel, sand, and clay. Road base (also called crushed limestone, flex base, or gravel in the Hill Country) is a processed, quarried product with consistent quality and particle sizing. Caliche can vary widely in quality depending on the source.


Which road material is cheapest in the Texas Hill Country?

Caliche is typically the lowest-cost option where it’s available, since it may be excavated on-site or sourced from nearby pits. Decomposed granite is inexpensive per square foot but tends to require more ongoing maintenance. Crushed limestone road base costs more upfront but generally performs better over time — meaning the total cost over 10 years is often lower than going with a cheaper material that needs frequent repair.


Can I use decomposed granite for a driveway in the Hill Country?

For a short, flat residential driveway or parking area, DG can work reasonably well in terms of aesthetics and initial cost. However, on sloped terrain — which is most of the Hill Country — DG erodes quickly in heavy rain. It also can’t support construction equipment, so if your property is being developed, crushed limestone road base is the better call from the start.


What base depth do I need for a Hill Country ranch road?

For light-to-moderate vehicle traffic, 4–6 inches of compacted road base over prepared subgrade is a common starting point. For roads that will see heavy construction equipment, concrete trucks, or ag equipment, 8–10 inches may be necessary. The right answer also depends on your soil conditions — clay-heavy subgrade requires more base depth than rocky caliche substrate. Have the site evaluated before committing to a spec.


Do I need a permit to build a road on my own land in Texas?

For most private ranch roads and access roads on your own property, no state permit is required. However, if your road crosses a creek, floodplain, or wetland area, you may need TCEQ or Army Corps of Engineers approval depending on the crossing type. Culvert installation at road crossings typically doesn’t require a permit for standard drainage, but confirm with your county before breaking ground in sensitive areas.


Can caliche road base support heavy equipment?

It depends on the quality of the caliche and how well it’s compacted. High-quality caliche that’s properly moisture-conditioned and compacted can handle moderate equipment loads. But it’s not consistent enough to rely on for a build-site access road that needs to support concrete trucks and heavy machinery week after week. For that application, processed crushed limestone road base is the safer choice.
