The word "tank" traces back to the Spanish estanque, carried into Texas ranching culture over centuries and never replaced. It means the same thing as a stock pond, a farm pond, or a ranch pond — a man-made body of water excavated or dammed on private land. What Are Stock Tanks (Ponds) Used For in the Texas Hill Country?


What a stock tank is used for varies by landowner. Some are purely functional — a reliable water source for cattle, horses, or working livestock, so you're not dependent on a well or hauled water. Others are built with wildlife in mind: a permanent water source that holds deer, turkey, and native birds on the property year-round, especially through a Hill Country drought. Some landowners want a fishing hole. Others want the view, the sound, the way a pond changes the character of a piece of land. Most want all of the above.


Does a Stock Tank Add Value to Texas Land?

Texas Water Law Basics — What You Can (and Can't) Do


Water law in Texas is its own world, but for most Hill Country landowners building a stock tank for livestock, wildlife, or personal use, the law is squarely on your side.


Diffused Surface Water vs. State Water


Texas divides water into two categories. Diffused surface water — rainwater and sheet runoff moving across your land before it enters a defined channel — is yours to capture and store freely. State water is anything flowing in a natural watercourse: a creek, river, or defined drainage channel. That belongs to the State of Texas, and using it to fill a pond generally requires a permit.


The Stock Tank Exemption (Texas Water Code §11.142)

The exemption has limits. It doesn't apply if the pond captures water from a navigable stream, crosses property lines, or is used for commercial purposes like irrigating crops for sale or supplying an event venue.

Site Selection — The Decision That Determines Everything

Most stock tank projects that fail — or never hold water the way the landowner expected — go wrong before the first piece of equipment arrives. They go wrong at site selection.

Read the Topography First


The best stock tank sites let the land do most of the work. You're looking for a natural low point or drainage draw between two higher areas — somewhere water already wants to go when it rains. A site like that minimizes how much dam work you need and maximizes how reliably the tank fills and stays full.


Watershed is the other half of the equation. The land draining into your tank needs to be large enough to fill it through seasonal rainfall, but not so large that a heavy rain event overwhelms the spillway and tops the dam. This is the most common reason Hill Country stock tanks fail, and it's why site evaluation from an operator who knows this terrain is not optional.


What You're Looking For in a Good Site


  • A natural bowl, draw, or low drainage area

  • Clay-bearing soil at depth — even in the Hill Country, clay pockets exist between rock layers

  • Reasonable equipment access

  • Distance from structures, large trees, and fence lines

How to Seal a Pond in the Texas Hill Country


This is where Hill Country pond construction separates itself from everything else in Texas. In East Texas, heavy clay soils do the sealing work for you. Out here on the Edwards Plateau, you have to find the clay — or bring it.


Finding Clay in a Limestone Landscape

A general excavator who hasn't built ponds in this specific terrain won't know to save what looks like unremarkable gray material. That's the difference between a pond that holds water through a drought and one that doesn't.

When There Isn't Enough Clay — Bentonite


When the natural clay layer isn't deep or dense enough to do the job alone, bentonite is the next tool. Bentonite is a sodium-activated pure clay that swells dramatically when it contacts water, filling micro-fractures and seep points throughout the pond floor and walls. It's spread, tilled into the existing soil, and compacted before the pond fills. When water rises, it activates and seals.


Bentonite adds cost, but it's often the difference between a functioning pond and an expensive drainage experiment.

Liners — When Nothing Else Will Work


Sometimes the geology simply won't cooperate. Heavily fractured limestone with no meaningful clay layer may require a synthetic liner — a guaranteed seal regardless of what's underneath. Liners are the most expensive option, but on the right site, they're the right answer. The goal is always the same: a pond that holds water. The path to that goal depends entirely on what's in the ground, which is why the site visit comes before the solution.


Excavation Depth, Dam Design, and Spillway Basics


Once the site is selected and the soil strategy is set, the engineering decisions begin. These three elements — depth, dam, and spillway — determine whether your stock tank functions the way you built it to function, or becomes a maintenance problem.

How Deep Should a Stock Tank Be in Texas?


The minimum functional depth for a Hill Country stock tank is 8 to 10 feet, but in South Texas heat, Dustin of LandPrep.com aims for 13 feet or deeper.

At shallower depths, ambient temperatures raise water temps enough to trigger algae and bacteria blooms. At 13+ feet, a thermal layer forms — colder water settles at the bottom, and at night the pond "turns over," drawing that cooler water to the surface and reducing overall pond temperature.


Shallower ponds evaporate faster, heat up faster, grow algae faster, and are the first to go completely dry in a drought year.


The Hill Country has been in serious drought conditions in recent years, and the ponds that have held water through it are the ones that were built with adequate depth. A pond that looks full at 4 feet in a wet year can be a cracked mud flat by August.

Most working stock tanks in this region run between half an acre and three acres in surface area, with depth determining longevity far more than surface size does.


Building a Dam on My Texas Property


If your pond is built by damming a natural draw rather than purely by excavation, the dam is the most structurally critical element on the site. It must be built from compacted material — no loose fill, no organic matter, no buried roots or stumps. Anything that decomposes inside a dam creates a seepage channel over time, and seepage channels become failures. The dam needs a compacted clay core to prevent water from migrating through it, and the face slopes need to be graded correctly to control erosion from both rainfall and wave action.


Spillway — The Safety Valve


Every stock tank needs a designed spillway — a controlled outlet that tells excess water exactly where to go during a rain event so it doesn't overtop and erode the dam. An overtopped dam is a failed dam, and in the Hill Country, where flash flooding is a real and recurring event, the spillway has to be sized for the watershed, not just average rainfall. This is not the place to cut corners.
