Phase 1: Site Assessment and Planning (1–2 Weeks Before Any Dirt Moves)


Before equipment rolls onto your property, the site needs to be evaluated. This phase is where most landowners underestimate the timeline — and where a good contractor earns their fee.

What happens during site assessment: A qualified contractor walks the drainage pattern, assesses soil type, checks for clay layers, evaluates the natural topography, and determines where the dam or spillway will sit. On Hill Country properties, this assessment also needs to account for the depth of the Edwards Plateau limestone layer — because hitting solid rock during excavation changes the project scope significantly.


In Comal County and Kendall County, limestone is often within a few feet of the surface on elevated terrain. In Blanco County, you may have more flexibility depending on whether you're working a creek drainage or an upland site. The contractor should know the difference and adjust accordingly.


This phase also includes permit timing. Under Texas Water Code §11.142, most stock tanks holding up to 200 acre-feet are exempt from TCEQ permitting. But if your site involves a jurisdictional waterway or wetland, that changes. Get clarity on this before you start digging.


Phase 2: Site Clearing and Access (3–5 Days, Typical)


Most pond sites require some land clearing before excavation can begin — cedar removal, brush clearing, and establishing a construction access road to get heavy equipment to the site.


In the Hill Country, this step is rarely optional. If your site is deep in cedar and there's no existing road, clearing and road base alone can add three to five days to the project.

How Long Does Pond Excavation Take? The Active Dig Phase


Favorable Terrain: 1–3 Weeks Active Construction


On a site with good drainage topography, accessible clay-bearing soils, and no major limestone obstruction, a 1-to-3-acre pond typically takes one to three weeks of active excavation and dam construction. This assumes the contractor has the right equipment — a tracked excavator for the basin work and a dozer for dam compaction and shaping.


The most efficient sites have a natural low spot with 10 feet or more of elevation difference between the sides and bottom of the planned basin. This minimizes the volume of material to move. The less you excavate, the faster the project moves.

Fall and early winter are the best seasons to build in the Hill Country. Cooler temperatures and more predictable rainfall make for better soil compaction and fewer weather delays. Summer projects in Comal and Blanco County can run into heat and drought complications that push timelines out.


Rocky Terrain: Add 1–3 Weeks for Limestone


If the excavator hits solid limestone — which is common on elevated Hill Country sites in Kendall County and Kerr County — the timeline extends. Breaking through the Edwards Plateau limestone layer requires a hydraulic breaker or rock saw, not just a standard bucket.


The good news: encountering limestone during excavation doesn’t mean the project is impossible. It means the project requires a contractor who has the right equipment and experience working this terrain.

Some crews don’t, and they’ll either walk away or underquote and come back to you for more money. Make sure you know what you’re hiring before the equipment shows up.


Seepage and Soil Sealing: When Clay Isn’t There


On the Edwards Plateau, native clay is not always available at the pond site. If the soil profile is sandy, gravelly, or predominantly limestone decomposition, the basin will not hold water without additional sealing.


Bentonite clay application or importation is the standard solution. This adds time to the project — typically several additional days for application and compaction — but it’s the right call.


A pond that won’t hold water is not a pond. It’s an expensive hole in the ground.

Phase 4: Dam, Spillway, and Final Grading (3–7 Days)


After excavation, the dam needs to be constructed, compacted in layers, and shaped. The principal spillway — the pipe that controls overflow — must be installed and properly sized for the watershed, not just average rainfall. Hill Country flash flood conditions require spillways built for extreme events, not typical ones.


Final grading and bank shaping follow, along with seeding the disturbed soil for erosion control. This phase usually takes three to seven days depending on the size of the dam and the complexity of the drainage structure.

Phase 5: First Fill — Let Nature Do the Work


Once construction is complete, the pond fills from watershed runoff — not from a hose or a pump. How long this takes depends entirely on rainfall timing and the size of your drainage area. In a wet year, a properly positioned stock tank in Blanco or Comal County can fill within one to three good rain events. In a drought year, you might wait longer.
