Drive any back road in the Texas Hill Country and you'll see it — solid walls of dark green cedar crowding out everything else, thick enough that you can't see ten feet into the brush. Cedar encroachment in the Texas Hill Country isn't new, but most landowners don't realize how fast it moves or what it's actually doing to their land until they've owned the property for a decade.

What Cedar Actually Is, and Why It's Everywhere


"Cedar" in Hill Country conversation almost always means Juniperus ashei — Ashe juniper, a scrubby native evergreen that's been part of this landscape for thousands of years. The problem isn't that it exists. The problem is how much of it exists now compared to a century ago.


Bird Dispersal and a Head Start on Everything Else


Cedar produces berries that birds and small mammals eat and spread across the landscape, and the seedlings that come up don't need much — thin soil, exposed limestone, and full sun are enough to get a cedar established where grass and oak seedlings would struggle.


Once established, cedar grows year-round and holds its canopy through winter, giving it a head start over deciduous competitors every single year.


A Century of Fire Suppression


Historically, wildfire moved through Texas Hill Country grasslands regularly enough to keep young cedar knocked back before it matured into a dense thicket. Once ranching and rural development made routine fire impractical, that check disappeared. Combine decades of fire suppression with reduced grazing pressure on some properties, and cedar has had a mostly uninterrupted run since.

The First Few Years Are Deceptive


A scattered stand of cedar on open pasture looks manageable for years, because individual trees are small and spaced out. Underneath that appearance, seedlings are establishing continuously, and by the time the canopy visibly closes in, the property already has a decade of germination behind it working its way up.


What Ten Years of No Clearing Looks Like

What Cedar Does to Water, Soil, and Carrying Capacity


Beyond the visual, cedar changes the property's underlying resources in ways that compound over time.


Water That Never Reaches the Ground


Research from Texas A&M's rangeland hydrology studies found that Ashe juniper canopy and litter intercept roughly a third of annual rainfall before it ever reaches mineral soil, compared to about 11% under open grassland.


In heavy cedar cover, that interception loss combines with the tree's year-round water draw to sharply reduce the deep drainage that recharges wells and springs — one Texas Hill Country study site measured zero deep drainage under 36% juniper cover, versus several inches a year under open grass.


Pasture Carrying Capacity Drops


Grass can't compete with mature cedar for light, water, or root space, so as cedar cover increases, forage production drops — which means fewer cattle or wildlife the land can actually support per acre. Landowners often notice this as "the grass just isn't coming back" long before they connect it to the cedar overhead.


What Clearing Changes
